VII Colloquium: April 30 - May 2, 1999:
The University of Washington, Seattle, WA

"Can Music Teachers Influence a Culture's Musical Life?"

Friday, April 30 @ University Inn - Seattle

7:30pm       Thomas A Regelski (State University of New York at Fredonia)
MayDay Group discussion of agency based on his paper on this web site,
"Critical Theory and Praxis: Implications for Professionalizing Music Education."

Tom applied his paper to Ideal no3, partially to test whether there is sufficient
agency in music teaching to "...channel [the musical] process, influencing the
directions in which it develops and the ... values it serves."

Saturday, May 1 @ School of Music, Univeristy of Washington

Provocateurs - Saturday sessions took up the subquestions under
MayDay Group Action Ideal no 3, one by one, with provocateurs
developing and presenting resolutions of one question each as the
                  schedule below suggests.

9:00am       Patricia Campbell (University of Washington) and Patricia Costa Kim
(Seattle Public Schools) on Action Ideal 3a: How can music teachers
be more accountable for increasing the likelihood that their
students will value musical participation throughout their lives?

10:30am     Marie McCarthy (University of Maryland) on Action Ideal 3b:
What can music teachers do to improve the individual, family and society
through the musical alternatives, initiatives and choices made
available and advanced through school music curriculum?

1:30pm       Carol Scott-Kassner (Seattle, Washington) on Action Ideal 3c:
What strategies can be developed to promote, improve and encourage the
musical traditions of particular segments of society and, at the same time,
help individuals become sensitive to and more successful within musical
cultures other than the ones in which they grew up?

3:00pm       Jere Humphreys (Arizona State University) on Action Ideal 3d:
How can the profession undertake a sustained campaign to reenergize
musical life in society, and thus to expand the contributions of music to life?

4:30pm       Elizabeth Gould (Boise State University)
Questions still open, issues unresolved, topics untreated:
                  Things to think about overnight.
(Discussion on these will begin on Sunday morning.)

Sunday, May 2 @ University Inn - Seattle

9:00am       MayDay Group wrap-up discussion and planning meeting
