II Colloquium: June 18 - 19, 1994:
University of Toronto, Toronto, ON

"Theoretical Issues in Music Education"

Toronto is beautiful this time of year! David Elliott has invited us to stick around for the weekend after the International Philosophy Symposium in mid-June (the 18th & 19th) for MayDay II and here's hoping you can make it. Tom Regelski and I had a planning session a few weeks ago, and he has invited some of us to develop several topics, an idea for this year's MayDay Group that emerged from last year's discussions. Here are the topics, with some questions of mine based on Tom's [printed on the back in the original document, but since lost]:

METHODS - Does the traditional loyalty to method help or hinder progress (however defined) in our field? How do/should method and curriculum relate? To what extent should methods be critiqued on a research base?

RESEARCH - What is the research base for music teaching? To what extent is the research agenda in our field responsive to its problems? used to motivate inquiry? involved in teacher education? inclusive of research in related fields?

GENERATIVE PROCESSES - Is a catalog or typology possible? Does it provide guidance for teaching? curriculum construction? re-constructing society more musically? How do generative processes mesh with teacher accountability? learning assessment?

'MULTICULTURALISM' - To what extent is MC descriptive of basic values in our field? in British-Canadian-American societies? Can MC be institutionalized? Is MC simply PC, or is it central? Is MC a viable construct for connecting with the present, or is it a way to do history?

CONCEPTS - Where has the conceptual approach gotten us? Is teaching for understanding changing its meaning? What do newer theories of mind (cognitive science, AI, physics and psychoneurology, "flow" theories) suggest to designers of music curriculums? methods? teaching techniques? To what extent can measurable results of experiential approaches be parsed out?

We'll start at about 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 18 and plan to break up in mid-afternoon (about 3:00) on Sunday, June 19. David Elliott has a room for us in the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music (Edw. Johnson Building) and there shall be signs unto ye as to particulars in that building.
