Historical documents, Commentary, and Essays from MDG Colloquia
For the first decade, MayDay Group Colloquia were devoted to extensive
discussion, critique, and analysis of the seven action ideals of the MayDay
Group agenda "Action for Change in Music Education." Since then, Colloquium
sponsors have chosen topics that have taken up other issues of professional importance. This collection of documents presents topic-focused summaries, abstracts, and reactions, along wih other documents about The MayDay Group history and agenda.
The papers found in this section are in-depth analyses of topics central to the MayDay Group mission. Two are by scholars outside of music and music education who present analyses of direct relevance to music and music education and are included as a result of to the MayDay Group's commitment to the importance of interdisciplinary research for music education. Recommendations for inclusion of other such papers are welcomed.
This section includes comments that take positions on general topics from the MayDay Group agenda. New contributions are always welcomed.
Published Collections of MDG Papers
Published collections of papers written by MayDay Group members presented at MayDay Group colloquiums but not otherwise on this web site.
This section (at present) contains one extended essay, in German. Being an international association of scholars from a variety of musical and cultural fields, the MayDay Group is eager to present ideas by scholars most at home in another language. Our scholarly journal ACT is also prepared to publish refereed articles in a foreign language, subject to the availability of reviewers in that language.
Music Education Course Syllabus Exchange
This section exists to allow professors and teachers to present their course syllabi for consideration and inspiration (maybe even analysis and critique) to others. We welcome new contributions.
These are extensive listings, some annotated, of research and other thinking relevant to the MayDay Group agenda for change. Some are copied here from their respective eColumns, where more information is available on the topic. Additions to individual bibliographies, or bibliographies of interest on other topics, are welcomed.
These links have been identified as containing information, resources, and references that may be useful for music educators concerned with "Action for Change in Music Education" and, thus, with being informed about a range of topics, disciplines, and content that are germane to better music education but are not usually encountered by music teachers. However, this listing is presented as 'for your information and consideration' and should not be construed as an endorsement of the organizations, individuals, institutions, and others, that sponsor the sites. Some are copied here from their respective eColumns, where more information is available on the topic.
These remarkable audio clips appear here courtesy of Professor Clarke Mackey, Department of Film Studies, Queen's University, Kingston, ON, Canada. They were featured on his 1998 web site, Memory Palace: Vernacular Culture in the Digital Age, "an audio-visual documentary web site committed to questioning conventional assumptions about art and culture." They originally appeared on his web site in a now-dated Real Player format, and appear here in MP3 format. Featured are several leading thinkers who offer a précis of their overall thinking, often a very incisive one, concerning important issues in music, music education, and education. |
