... eColumns

Books // Coordinators: David Lines / Eleanor Stubley
Features: Dialogs

This column will deal with important books, new and old, in and outside of music education, that the editors, David Lines and Eleanor Stubley, consider to be of special interest and importance to music educators at all levels. Please bring to their attention any such books, or bibliographies of such books, that can be posted and discussed.

Choral Music // Coordinators: Patrick Freer / Cedricia Maugars
Features: Introduction // Dialogs

This column is moderated by Patrick Freer and Cedricia Maugars. It deals specifically with choral music as lived in schools and as lived beyond schools.

Community Music in Action // Coordinators: Marja Heimonen / Lee Higgins / Patricia Kim
Features: Introduction // Dialogs // Reports

Three editors, Marja Heimonen, Lee Higgens, and Patricia Kim, maintain a column on community music, both in schools (public and 'community music schools' of whatever name), and as social change. Given that the editors are from Finland, the UK, and the US, a wide perspective is available on this newly important venue of music education.

Comparative Music Education // Coordinator: Chi Cheung Leung
Features: Coordinators // Dialogs // Reports // Links

This column is coordinated by Chi Cheung Leung, with the help of several other regional coordinators, and has several reports of interest posted, and links to other sites. The site is dedicated to informing music educators of developments in different parts of the world and thus to benefiting from insights and practices from various countries and regions.

Curriculum and Assessment // Coordinator: Cathy Kassell Benedict
Features: Introduction

Cathy Kassell Benedict will coordinate this column dealing with major issues and changes in curriculum and assessment facing music educators today. Theory and practice in these areas are especially central to the MDG Agenda (see Action Ideal 7) and can benefit from wider consideration by music educators.

eBook in Progress: The Future of Classical Music // Author: Greg Sandow
Coordinator: Tom Regelski
Features: Introduction // Dialogs // Link

This 'column' is actually a link to the ArtsJournal blog of composer/critic Greg Sandow of Juilliard Conservatory concerning the problems and prospects of classical music. It is actually an eBook in process, and thus Greg is very interested in getting feedback of any kind for consideration. Such contributions sometimes find their way into his book. The site contains points of view about classical music that are important to 'unpack' and has valuable insights for music educators who are particularly concerned with "the future of classical music." The dialog forum for this site is hosted by Tom Regelski.

Music Teaching as Praxis // Coordinator: Vince Bates
Features: Introduction // Column // Dialogs // Blog // Links

This is a column devoted especially to teachers and their questions, issues, and needs. It is coordinated by Vince Bates and has enjoyed some lively dialog to date. Teachers and teacher-educators are especially recommended to this site.

Music and Health // Coordinator: Leon Thurman
Features: Introduction // Dialogs // News // Views // Links // Bibliography

Leon Thurman has mounted a column featuring news and views and an extensive bibliography about health issues and music education--particularly research and perspectives involving a wide variety of health problems that often arise from certain practices, pedagogies, acoustical conditions, and the like. Much of this information is not widely known in music education circles and is central to promoting an 'ethic' of music teaching.

Music, Equity, and Social Justice // Coordinator: Debbie Bradley
Features: Introduction // Dialogs // Links // Bibliography

Deborah Bradley hosts this column which, to date, has involved information, a bibliography, and lively dialog about race and gender as aspects of social justice in music education and its practices--another aspect relevant to an 'ethic' of music teaching.

Policy in Music Education // Coordinators: Patrick M Jones / Richard Colwell
Features: Introduction // Dialogs // Bibliography

Richard Colwell and Patrick M Jones coordinate this and dialogs dealing with policy in music education. Policy is at the core of decisions made regarding music education and all those engaged in the music education endeavor need to be familiar with both issues relating to policy and procedures for implementing and studying it. This column and related dialogs addresses both of them.
